A Globetrotting Guide to the Internet
Vancouver, B.C., etc.

Bugs of British Columbia
Author: John Acorn and Ian Sheldon

Bug enthusiasts and amateur entomologists will appreciate this latest field guide from The Discovery Channels "Nature Nut" John Acorn and illustrator Ian Sheldon. John's humorous and entertaining text brings out the personality of each insect while Ian's detailed illustrations bring them to life.

Be prepared to be amazed! British Columbia has about 20,000 species of bugs. Bugster John Acorn describes 125 of the most interesting creepy crawlers in the province. From delicate and beautiful butterflies to scary and venomous spiders, all of the insects in the book are grouped and colour coded for easy identification. A quick-glance key to bugs at the beginning of the book enables the reader to easily locate each insect.

The introduction to the guide includes the basic information you'll need to become an aspiring bugster, with a background on bugs in B.C., basic bug anatomy, history, ecology, and tips to get the most for your interest in insects. Each of the 125 insects is illustrated and includes interesting facts about the physical characteristics, habitat, and history of the bug.

Unlike the stuffy textbook style descriptions one would expect to find in a field guide of entomology, John Acorn's descriptions and text are delightfully fun. As an example, John describes the bizarre mating habits of the Minor Ground Mantid:

"... on occasion, a female will eat her mate during the act of copulation, and he will, indeed, continue mating, even without his brain. Apart from the last unfortunate feature, mantids are surely the most human-like of all bugs."

Author John Acorn is well known and loved as "The Nature Nut" on The Discovery Channel. As the star and host of the popular international television series "Acorn, The Nature Nut," John encourages people to get out and see the natural world first-hand. His good-humored blend of science and love of nature make his topics enjoyable and easy to understand. He has a delighted ability to cut through jargon and theory, while being interesting, accurate and entertaining. All of these talents are clearly evident in his Lone Pine books Birds of British Columbia and Bugs of British Columbia.

As a child, John was hopelessly fascinated by insects - a benign affliction that eventually led to a Master's degree in Entomology, with a focus on his favorite bug, the tiger beetle. Today he works as an award-winning writer, speaker and broadcaster and spends most of his spare time being exactly what you might expect - a bugster.

Illustrator, Ian Sheldon, caught collecting caterpillars at the age of three, has sought out the beauty and diversity of nature ever since. He is an accomplished ecologist, having completed a degree in Ecology from Cambridge University and a Master's degree in ecotourism from the University of Alberta. A naturalist and educator, Ian is also a gifted artist whose work is shown in galleries both in Canada and abroad. Ian enjoys communicating his passion for nature through visual arts and the written word.

Some of the Lone Pine titles Ian has authored include Seashore of British Columbia, numerous titles in the Animal Tracks series, and he has illustrated the best selling Bugs of Alberta and The Ecuador Nature Guide to the Southwest Forests.

Bugs of British Columbia is available at your local bookseller or can be ordered from Lone Pine Publishing at 1-800-661-9071.
