A Globetrotting Guide to
the Internet
Dan Varnals - A Personal Profile Artist Dan Varnals describes himself as a realist; his inspiration coming from his environment. "Perhaps
it is the patterns of light and shadow or the way colours
are effected by sunlight and reflections that catches my
eye. The challenges of capturing these qualities is what
fascinates me. The subject matter can range from the
mundane to the magnificent but the goal remains to
capture and reveal these essential qualities." A childhood passion and escape to the adult realization that this was what he did best led him to art school. Dan attended St. Martin's School of Art in London, England and the University of British Columbia where he earned a Bachelors and Masters degrees in Art Education. This in turn led to a career as a high school teacher at Richmond's Matthew McNair Secondary School. Dan found that the challenges of teaching left little time or energy to pursue his own art. Presently, having taken an early retirement, Dan is free again to do what he does best. Recently, Dan has focused upon his local surroundings in Richmond and particularly, Steveston. The shapes,
patterns and colours to be found amongst the fishing
boats. The ropes, hoses, chains, net floats and fenders
as well as the boats themselves. These provide marvelous
shapes and colours and add to the effects of sunlight,
cast shadows and light sparkling on and reflecting off
the water provide many sources of images. I love the
functional quality of all this stuff. The used looks of
the boats -- the rust stains, the identification numbers,
and so on -- all convey the reality of a working fishing
village. Dan Varnals Artist
